TV magazine looks at films from around the world

by John Catania

The August-September episode of In the Life, a bi-monthly gay and lesbian TV newsmagazine, take its third annual look at films from around the world which highlight and explore the gay and lesbian experience.

From documentaries to experimental works and independent films, gay men and lesbians, as well as straight directors, are producing works about gay life that are vastly different in scope and style. Each diverse project provides insight about same-sex love that is unprecedented in contrast to just a decade ago.

whose personal transformation parallels women's changing roles over the past 40 years. The film illustrates a strong intergenerational relationship that exists among many lesbians.

IN THE LIFE

Johnny Symons' film Beauty Before Age looks at aging and appearances in gay male culture.

This episode, called “Lights, Camera, Activism!" showcases works from places as far flung as the Ivory Coast, Germany, China, Canada, France, India, and the United States.

The segment's lead story highlights the growth of lesbian and gay film festivals. Twenty years ago San Francisco introduced a new concept-develop a film festival which would promote and showcase the work of gay men and lesbians. Today there are nearly 100 gay and lesbian film festivals around the globe, from Bologna to Budapest and from Nashville to New York. This segment explores how gay and lesbian film festivals have grown, and more importantly, how they've sustained and encouraged the work of gay film artists who are challenging and often changing the face of independent and mainstream film.

The show also features a story that looks at the tentative but notable steps for gay visibility being made in four different parts of the world as reflected in the work of filmmakers. Through films from Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, and West Africa, this segment shows how directors use the medium of film to explore issues of gay and lesbian identity, a subject that in many countries has just begun to be discussed.

Generations in documentaries

This story highlights three different documentaries which examine the gay experience through the perspective of age and gender. The first, Beauty Before Age, reveals the complexities of growing older in a culture that increasingly objectifies young people and rejects its elders. Men ages 19 to 77 discuss the pressure to conform to an idealized body type, the impact of HIV, and their fears about being old and alone.

The second documentary, Some Ground to Stand On, tells the life story of Blue Lunden, a working-class lesbian activist

of four young men and women and their views on the gay community and of growing up queer at the end of the millennium. The life of It's Elementary

In honor of this episodes film and video theme, In the Life turns the focus of this regularly featured segment from the day in the life of one person to the lifespan of one controversial film.

It's Elementary, an award-winning documentary about teaching gay issues in grade schools, has caused a firestorm of controversy in numerous communities across the country. Tracking this storm, from classrooms to Congress, illuminates how powerful film as a communications medium can be.

The segment also looks at the winners of In the Life's annual Short Film and Video Competition, which features gay-themed shorts by queer directors from around the world. This year's winner, Love and Dinner, by director Sean Simmons, is a four-minute black and white short that depicts a young lesbian couple's mutual anticipation toward seeing one another at the end of the work day.

The runner-up was Good Night I Love You, an animated documentary by Gordon Thomas that takes a humorous and touching look at expectations of the early months of a relationship.

In the Life airs on Saturday, August 29 at 11:30 pm on WNEO-WEAO channels 45 and 49 in Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown; and on Friday, September 4 at 10 pm on WQLN channel 54 in Erie, Pa. A complete list of airdates on 100 stations nationwide can be found on the show's web site at http://www.inthelifetv.org.
